Swallowtail Lighthouse Announces Grand Re-Opening Celebration

The Swallowtail Lightkeepers are excited to announce that, with the completion of major restoration work at Swallowtail Lighthouse, we will be celebrating  a Grand Re-Opening Friday, August 16, 2024, at the Grand Manan Community Center, starting at 1 pm.  CHCO TV’s Vicki Hogarth will co-host a live broadcast with MLA Andrea Anderson- Mason and Mayor Bonnie Morse.  All members of the public are invited to attend and there will be a reception immediately following.

After the reception summer students will be on the peninsula to provide free tours of the Lighthouse and the Keepers’ House during the celebration weekend. Swallowtail Lighthouse will be open for the full 2024 season, but the August 16 celebration will bring together those volunteers, donors, residents and tourists who have watched the lighthouse’s restoration unfold over the last several months.

The  restoration efforts prepared the buildings to withstand the next fifty years of wind, weather, and the effects of climate change.   When work crews stripped the 90-year-old wooden shingles from the Lighthouse, significant water damage and rot was discovered. Not surprising for a 163-year-old weather beaten tower, but with the completion of restoration work this project has added decades to the life of this beloved Light Station.

Please come and join us on August 16.
